Who are we? Cé muid?‍ ‍

How did we get here? Conas a thángamar anseo?

The West Cork Gamelan is a community music ensemble that is totally open and free to join, that doesn’t require previous musical experience, and that has inclusion and participation at its core.

This is only gamelan in Ireland that exists outside a university city and has a remarkable back story.

What is a Gamelan? Cad is Gamelan ann?

Festival goers are invited to try out this inclusive orchestra, which is a tuned bronze percussion ensemble consisting of 30 different instruments (gongs, metallaphones, xylophones and others).  The instruments have an enchanting, otherworldly sound, and come from the ancient musical court tradition of Java, Indonesia. Gamelan is by its very nature participatory and sociable and all are welcome regardless of their level of musical experience; if you can hit a gong with a mallet, you can play!  Participants will be amazed at how quickly they will be making beautifully sonorous music with these exotic instruments.

Research has shown that Gamelan has been found to promote feelings of togetherness and group cohesion which may be understood through the shifting boundaries of self/other observed in forms of joint action. Players often describe a feeling of oneness with others, of losing themselves in the moment.

Come along on a Wednesday evening and experience it yourself!
